The mystery of self motivation

Ok, so I really didn’t want to write anything today which brings me to the topic of discussion today. How do we go about motivating ourselves to get things done? I mean especially those things we don’t want to do but are essential for our progress in life. I don’t know about you guys out there but my biggest motivation challenge is that of getting out of bed before 10am!

Yeah laugh if you will but seriously, you wake up and ask yourself, why do i have to get out of bed and work? Why do we need money to survive in this day and age? Why am i busy fulfilling someone elses dream and not even getting a pat on the back? These kinda questions plague many of us but the fear of loss atleast motivates us to get to work and earn our paycheck.

But my question is, how do we positively motivate ourselves to get outta bed and work passionately, to work on our relationships, to develop our talents and interests, to spend time meditating in the presence of God, to write an excellent blog? How do we live passionate motivated lives? I haven’t lived that in a very very long time.

I recently read an article about the 5minute rule. Basically for everything your not motivated to do, you give yourself just 5minutes to start whatever it is and if after 5minutes your not satisfied you can quit. But before you quit, yuo give yourself another 5min to see if you can’t get thru it. The logic is that once you get momentum, you’ll keep moving. Well i decided to give it a shot with writing this blog entry and guess what? It’s been over 5minutes and i’m still writing.

Hmmm…I guess i’ll give it a shot with some of the other areas of my life that need a motivation boost. Only problem though is this method gets you going but you still don’t have the “feelings” of motivation, the excitement, the get up and go. How does one invoke that?

Well more reading tells me the answer lies in creating a compelling and grandiose vision for your life that you can work towards. Logic is, if you have a vision to say, become a millionaire in 10 years and live the millionaire lifestyle, you’ll feel excited & motivated to pursue that every morning. In contrast if you have a poor vision of earning a measly paycheck in a dead end job you hate and creditors knocking down your door, it will be very hard to have any feelings of motivation. So you really wanna have something to look forward to in order to be emotionally motivated. There has to be a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow to spur you on. The amazing thing is, we can pick and choose what we want in the pot.

So for me, it could be a blissful marriage with healthy wondeful children while yours could be a castle in the hills of kigezi. Whatever it is, it’s upto you to determine what would be compelling enough to let you live motivated.

Whatever that vision may be, i pray you discover the path to a motivated and passionate life.

As for me, I’m still not sure bout gettin up in the mornings tho. i’m  just not a morning person :)

Read this yesterday, but couldn’t find an appropriate comment. Still can’t find one.

But one thing I’m learning is there is no quick fix rule for this things.

A good book is Seven Habits of Highly Successful People, by Covey. His analysis of Personality versus character is brilliant. Many of the solutions people propose are surface solutions, dealing with trying to change your personality. They do not address the inner person, the deeply ingrained character that you are.

We need to look at our issues and problems from the inside out, stop hacking at the leaves and start hacking at the roots.

I know, I’ve quoted too much, but in there, there is a winner.

    Touche
But i do agree. In the words of someone greater than Steve Covey…“Out of the riches of a mans heart…”
